A scientist’s vengeance propels Peter Curzon seven hundred years into the future, where he finds himself in a very mysterious world. Science has banished the need to work in order to earn money, and people only pursue activities as a vocation and by choice. But everyone is also engaged on a Great Task--constructing gigantic towers, with no discernable purpose, following the orders given to them in the temples of Ijax, a mysterious Buddha-like entity worshipped as a god. Peter alone seems immune to the influence of Ijax, and unless he can penetrate to the root of the mystery, mankind appears to be doomed. Another grand sci-fi adventure from the golden age.

Slaves of Ijax John Russell Fearn 9781434435897 Books

This is a great example of golden era Sci-Fi adventure. The hero is an ordinary man thrust into an extraordinary world. He must someone all his wits and courage to survive and save the day. Of course he has the aide of a plucky young woman as well.

Much of the 'future' technology seems old fashion to a modern reader, but this doesn't diminish the drama one bit.

I recommend this book to Asimov and Arthur C Clark fans.

Slaves of Ijax John Russell Fearn 9781434435897 Books Reviews

Published in 1948, this story from the pulps is targeted at teen readers who (apparently) wanted a straight-ahead story without a lot of frills or twists. The plot is like a Kansas road, everything visible from miles away. The main character is an unintentional idiot who spouts what the British author must have thought was a snappy American patois. The "science" is charming in a way, and that's pretty much the only redeeming feature of the book - the blithe, simplistic "creative writing" sort of science that the story is embellished with gives us a window onto how people on the brink of today's technological developments imagined the future to be. Not really recommended at it's current price. This is 99c fare.
This was a fun read.
